Background of VPN protocols

There are several types of VPN protocols in use today. Of these, Wireguard is the newest protocol that is trending nowadays, but what is Wireguard VPN protocol?

In this article, we explore about this VPN protocol and look at modern VPN services that support Wireguard.

Yes, I know this is a bit on the technical side but it’s important to learn about Wireguard. This is a ‘new giant’ on the block and it’s important for top VPNs to be able to support it.

Let’s dive in…

what is wireguard vpn protocol

What is Wireguard all about?

This VPN protocol has raised excitement in a lot of people. You may think it was created in 2020 but actually Wireguard was formed back in 2016!

It took all these years of testing and development until now, where the official release was in March 2020.

Before Wireguard, the industry standard was (and is still) OpenVPN and this was formed in 2001 so it is fairly old.

It has stood the test of time with reliable speeds, strong encryption and ease of use.

Wireguard promises to take that number 1 spot by providing far superior features. These include:

  • Faster speeds
  • Smaller code
  • Simpler to use
  • More security

Wireguard Encryption

It uses a complex, proven cryptography to encrypt your data and the protocols are:

  • Noise protocol framework
  • Curve25519
  • Chacha20
  • Poly1305

One of the benefits of using a small code is that the protocol is lightweight hence easily used in smartphones.

This guarantees faster connections and improved battery performance.

Obviously security is not to be sacrificed, and according to the official Wireguard site, it is more secure than OpenVPN.

Another benefit of a smaller code is that it’s easier to fix bugs and audit any security vulnerabilities.

Wireguard is supported by most operating systems like Windows, MacOS, iOS, Android and Linux. You can download the apps from their official website.

You can also use it on your router and that secures all devices connected to the router.

Development of the protocol is ongoing and that means there could be kinks that need to be straightened out.

However, some VPN providers have already rolled out Wireguard as part of their ammunition to fight cyber-attacks.

I will mention them in the last section and you can start using Wireguard right away.

What we think

The version that is out is Wireguard 1.0.0 and since it is a new protocol, it is probably good to wait for the next version.

That way most of the bugs are fixed and concerns raised are addressed in subsequent versions.

If you work with sensitive data, it’s safer to stick to OpenVPN for now because it has been used for a long time and has an excellent track record.

Wireguard will definitely be the best VPN protocol when issues around security have been addressed.

The fact that it has made it to version 1.0.0 means significant leaps have been made.

VPNs that support Wireguard

You can start using Wireguard and test it to get a feel of this new protocol. The opinion is divided among VPN providers with some not yet using Wireguard.

However, we have top VPNs, like NordVPN, that have embraced this new protocol.

I have only picked VPNs that are at the top with reliable services.

These also come with all standard features that include:

  • A reliable kill switch so that internet connection is terminated when there is any disruption of the VPN connection.
  • No DNS leaks
  • Fast connection speed so that calls have an excellent quality and there are no dropped calls. VoIP calls use data and encryption slows down speed of the connection so you want a VPN that is fast to avoid any call interruptions.
  • Widespread server coverage with servers in countries where VoIP is not restricted. You need to connect to one of these servers to successfully bypass your local ISP without worrying about congestion.
  • Ability to use anonymous payment methods like Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies.
  • At least there should be a money-back guarantee so that you are able to test a VPN before committing to a plan.
  • Good customer support in case you have any challenges.
  • No logs identifying your internet activities must be kept by the VPN provider.
  • Your VPN traffic must be undetected because some service providers monitoring your traffic may block any VPN traffic. VPNs like NordVPN have obfuscated servers that hide VPN traffic.
  • A VPN must have strong encryption, preferably AES 256 bit encryption so that your activities are hidden from your ISP or the government.

Of course there are some top VPNs that have not jumped onboard because of security concerns. One of them is ExpressVPN but it has indicated that it supports the auditing of Wireguard.

Once the protocol has passed all the security tests then it can be rolled out to ExpressVPN users.

Wireguard is newer than OpenVPN and as more reviews are done we expect more VPN providers to embrace it.
