In a development that sends shock waves across the airline industry, Air India was hacked over a period of 3 weeks and this was done via SITA passenger system service.

The Air India hack

This data breach lead to the compromise of at least 4 million user accounts, giving cybercriminals access to details like:

  • Names
  • Date of birth
  • Contact information
  • Passport information
  • Ticket information
  • Credit card data
  • Frequent flyer data

SITA’s passenger system service serves the Star Alliance of airlines and it was hacked in Atlanta, US.

The data breach was described as highly sophisticated and likely included other airlines as well that use the same data center like Singapore Airlines, Lufthansa and Malaysia Airlines to name a few.

In a statement, SITA highlighted the following:

“We recognize that the Covid-19 pandemic has raised concerns about security threats, and, at the same time, cyber-criminals have become more sophisticated and active. This was a highly sophisticated attack. SITA acted swiftly and initiated targeted containment measures. The matter remains under continued investigation by SITA’s security incident response team with the support of leading external experts in cyber-security.”

After the cyberattack, SITA immediately informed the affected customers and organizations.

Protect your privacy online

The SITA data breach is an eye opener as cybercriminals are always on the hunt for your personal information.

This information is very valuable and easily finds its way to the Dark Web where it is sold to other cybercriminals.

That is why I recommend that you browse the internet anonymously and securely by using a VPN.

A VPN changes your IP address and adds an extra layer of security so that its hard for hackers to pin-point your location.

  • The overall best VPN that I recommend is NordVPN due to its leading security features:
  • Antimalware
  • Adblock
  • Masks your IP address
  • Encrypts your traffic
  • 68% off a 2-year plan
  • 30-day money-back guarantee

This VPN works across all major platforms and you can connect up to 6 devices simultaneously.

You can check out other premium VPN services and read detailed reviews but for maximum security, go with NordVPN.

Conclusion

Cyberattacks are becoming more complicated as more hacking technology is developed.

The least you can do is shield yourself from potential cyberattacks and a good VPN does the job.

Hopefully, SITA will implement more measures to prevent any future data breaches and safeguard the information of passengers.
