In a sad development, antivirus pioneer John McAfee committed suicide while incarcerated in Barcelona, a few hours before being extradited to the U.S.
According to his lawyer, Javier Villalba, he died by hanging “as the 9 months sentence brought him to despair.”
McAfee was 75 at the time of his death and in May 2021, he indicated that given his age, he would spend the rest of his life in jail if convicted by a U.S. court.
“I am hoping that the Spanish court will see the injustice of this,” he said, adding “the United States wants to use me as an example.”
McAfee evaded U.S. authorities for years after being indicted for tax evasion in Tennessee and also involved in cryptocurrency fraud, a case that was opened in New York.
On 3 October 2020, the tech founder was detained by Spanish authorities as he was about to escape to Istanbul with a British passport.
Before launching the word’s first commercial antivirus in 1987, McAfee worked for NASA, Xerox and Lockheed Martin.
Later he sold the company to Intel, relinguishing all the rights to the software and it still carries his name today with a 500 million user base.
On the day of his demise, 23 June 2021, the Spanish court agreed to extradite McAfee to the U.S. and hours later, he was found dead in his cell.
“This is the result of a cruel system that had no reason to keep this man in jail for so long,” Villalba commented.
In 2019, McAfee wilfully refused to pay U.S. income taxes citing ideological reasons and left the country that same year to avoid a trial.
He was largely living on a megayacht with his wife, 4 large dogs, 2 security guards and 7 staff.
At some point, he offered to assist Cuba to avoid a U.S. trade embargo using cryptocurrency.
In 2018, McAfee made shocking revelations that he fathered 47 children! He met his wife, Janice McAfee, when she solicited him as a prostitute while he was on the run.
In a post on Twitter on Sunday, “Now the U.S. authorities are determined to have John die in prison to make an example of him for speaking out against the corruption within their government agencies… There is no hope of him ever having a fair trial in America.”
McAfee will also be remembered for creating Everkey, a security gadget, which he called “a f—ing game changer.”
