Tik Tok woes continue
In 2020, Tik Tok featured in the papers for the wrong reasons. Previously, the company was fighting to continue operations in the USA and the judge came to its rescue. Now, 10 days after banning the company, Pakistan lifted Tik Tok ban but gave the company a warning.
The ban came after authorities cited that the platform promoted indecent content and degradation of societal values.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authorities (PTA) pulled the plug on the 9th of October 2020 and after discussions with Tik Tok management, the ban was lifted.
PTA tweeted this statement “assurance from the (TikTok) management that they will block all accounts repeatedly involved in spreading obscenity and immorality”,
In three months, about 25 000 Tik Tok accounts of Pakistan origin and around 4 million videos were deleted from the platform.
What to expect under the new conditions
Tik Tok agreed to moderate all content that originates from Pakistan, filtering out any content that violates the agreed conditions.
In a tweet they wrote “TikTok will moderate the account in accordance with local laws”
A spokesperson from Tik Tok even gave a press statement in appreciation of the reversal of the ban “We appreciate the PTA’s commitment to ongoing productive dialogue and recognize their care of the digital experience of the Pakistani users”
If the conditions are not met, Tik Tok risks being permanently banned from Pakistan.
Half a million US dollars will be invested by Tik Tok to upgrade their systems so as to meet the terms.
How do they do that?..
- Employing Human Resources in Pakistan to actively moderate accounts
- Use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to automatically detect and filter unwanted content
How popular is Tik Tok in Pakistan?
This platform is very popular in Pakistan, with 43 million installs, of which 14.7 million installs were for 2020.
Other countries like India have banned the platform completely, citing security concerns.
Globally there is increasing awareness to guard against data leaks on the internet.
