Tik Tok woes continue
Tik Tok is frequently featuring in the papers for the wrong reasons. Last time, the company was fighting to continue operations in the USA and the judge came to its rescue. Now, 10 days after banning the company, Pakistan lifts Tik Tok ban but gave the company a warning.
The ban came after authorities cited that the platform promoted indecent content and degradation of societal values.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authorities (PTA) pulled the plug on the 9th of October and after discussions with Tik Tok management, the ban was lifted.
PTA tweeted this statement “assurance from the (TikTok) management that they will block all accounts repeatedly involved in spreading obscenity and immorality”,
In three months, about 25 000 Tik Tok accounts of Pakistan origin and around 4 million videos have been deleted from the platform.
What to expect under the new conditions
Tik Tok agreed to moderate all content that originates from Pakistan, filtering out any content that violates the agreed conditions.
In a tweet they wrote “TikTok will moderate the account in accordance with local laws”
A spokesperson from Tik Tok even gave a press statement in appreciation of the reversal of the ban “We appreciate the PTA’s commitment to ongoing productive dialogue and recognize their care of the digital experience of the Pakistani users”
If the conditions are not met, Tik Tok risks being permanently banned from Pakistan. Half a million US dollars will be invested by Tik Tok to upgrade their systems so as to meet the terms.
How do they do that?..
- Employing Human Resources in Pakistan to actively moderate accounts
- Use Artificial Intelligence (AI) to automatically detect and filter unwanted content
How popular is Tik Tok in Pakistan?
This platform is very popular in Pakistan, with 43 million installs, of which 14.7 million installs were for 2020.
Other countries like India have banned the platform completely, citing security concerns. Globally there is increasing awareness to guard against data leaks on the internet.
What you need to do
The internet is not a safe environment if you don’t take precautions when online. Incidences of data breaches happen every year and can be costly.
I’m sure you remember the events when Facebook was hauled before the courts after security flaws were exposed in Facebook company.
One of the ways in which you can surf the internet securely is by using a VPN. Without a VPN hackers see whatever you do and you are a sitting duck.
In addition, with a VPN you mask your IP address and use platforms like Tik Tok securely.
To log into a platform like Tik Tok you need a username and password. If you are not careful and use a weak password, your account can be hacked.
To counter that, you can use a reliable password manager like NordPass and it’s FREE. Learn more about NordPass and use it to your advantage starting today.
There is a list of VPNs that can seamlessly unblock Tik Tok if you are in a region where it is blocked.
It is important to stick to top VPNs with reliable security features because cheap VPNs and proxies don’t do a good job.
Now that the PTA has tightened its grip on Tik Tok in Pakistan, expect more monitoring of traffic by your ISP.
You can encrypt your traffic easily with a VPN such that even your ISP won’t be able to see the sites you visit.
It’s a relief for Tik Tok that they got away with a warning. Some countries like India banned the platform completely on the 29th of June 2020.
