Background of ProtonVPN

Trustpilot 3.1

ProtonVPN is a VPN dedicated to liberate the internet and offer total privacy to EVERYONE (you will see why later). In this article, we look at the complete ProtonVPN review and why you need to check it out.

This VPN was founded in 2014 by a team of scientists who converged at CERN (The European Center Of Nuclear Research). Based in Switzerland, this VPN has very high privacy and security policies so it makes it to the list of best VPNs we recommend.

ProtoVPN is not all about VPN services but it also has ProtonMail, the largest encrypted mail service in the world.

ProtonVPN servers

There is worldwide server distribution comprising of 1,077 servers in 54 countries. This may not be at the same level with top VPNs like Private Internet Access VPN or NordVPN but the service is excellent.

There are Standard servers and Secure Core servers. Secure core servers protect your traffic by routing it through multiple servers first to defend against any privacy breaches.

This means if you connect to a region with high jurisdiction like USA, the traffic first goes through Secure Core servers. Any hacker who tries to find your IP address won’t be able to go past the Secure Core servers hence you remain anonymous.

These servers are located in countries with strict privacy laws: Switzerland, Sweden and Iceland. They are housed in underground data centers and those in Iceland are at a former military base.

ProtonVPN wholly owns Secure Core servers without involvement of any third parties. Connection to the internet is by dedicated a ProtonVPN network with IP addresses owned and operated by their Local Internet Registry.

This guarantees 100% anonymity on the web and no-one tempers with that system because it’s a maze in a maze. To use Secure Core servers, you need to sign up for the Plus and Visionary plans.

Other plans get Standard servers so if you are dealing with sensitive data and you want 100% privacy, I suggest you get access to Secure Core servers.

How much does ProtonVPN cost?

Remember in the introduction I indicated ProtonVPN has plans for everyone. Well, it’s actually true.

There are 4 plans (1 free and 3 paid). The plans are as follows:

  • Free Plan with access to 3 countries and unlimited data. Network speed is not the highest
  • Basic Plan has access to 50 countries with higher network speed. Costs 4 Euros/month
  • Plus Plan has the highest speed and you get 5 simultaneous connections. You can also unblock sites like Netflix, has Tor over VPN and access to the legendary Secure Core servers (read above). The plan costs 8 Euros/month
  • Visionary Plan lets you access all the features available in the Plus Plan plus and more. You also get 10 simultaneous connections and that is adequate for all your devices. In addition, you get ProtonMail Visionary account and all this is for 24 Euros/month

Unlike other free VPN services, ProtonVPN has a free plan with unlimited data and that is good news if you are not ready to pay for a premium plan.

How many devices are supported?

The number of devices supported by one account depends on the plan you select. If you go for the best plan, you can use a maximum of 10 devices simultaneously.

All the major operating systems are supported and these are:

  • MacOS
  • iOS
  • Android
  • Windows
  • Linux
  • Routers

Encryption of traffic

ProtonVPN uses AES, key exchange is done with 4096-bit RSA and HMAC with SHA384 is used for message aunthentication.

Secure VPN protocols are used to keep your data secure. ProtonVPN uses OpenVPN protocol which is the industry standard. You can learn more about OpenVPN protocol in one article where I went into greater detail.

How is ProtonVPN customer support?

Unlike other top VPNs, ProtonVPN has no live chat so if you have any queries you have to send an email.

Does ProtonVPN unblock Netflix?

Netflix is the most popular video-on-demand streaming service and with ProtonVPN you can watch all content on Netflix in any part of the world.

You can start following the weekly top 10 Netflix TV shows right here on VPNAnchor. Go to the Menu and select Netflix.

Conclusion

ProtonVPN is definitely a top VPN that takes privacy and security seriously. You can start of with a free plan if you intend to do some light browsing on the net without working with sensitive data.

However, to be on the safe side you need access to the Secure Core servers and that means you have to sign up for the Plus or Visionary plan.
