Background of Windscribe VPN
Windscribe is a VPN company based in Canada that was founded in 2016 and is owned by Yegor Sak. In this article, we look at the complete Windscribe VPN review and see whether it is the best VPN for you.
As you will see later, this VPN is popular for its free plan and also excellent, additional features if you choose a paid plan.
Cost of Windscribe VPN
This is where Windscribe manages to lure clients because they have a generous free package.
When I signed up I got 2 Gig free data, which was upgraded to 10 Gig/month when I confirmed my email.
They dangled another carrot and the free data was bumped to 15 Gig/month upon tweeting about the VPN.
This free plan is better than what TunnelBear or Hide.me offers. However, if you want a free VPN with unlimited data, ProtonVPN is the best choice.
Windscribe has 2 plans:
- A free plan described above
- Paid plan where you can pay monthly ($9.00/month) or yearly ($4.08/month)
- A custom plan where you can build your own plan. Here you choose a server at a cost of $1/server and this adds 10 Gig of data on top of your allowed monthly bandwidth. (Minimum order $2)
A custom plan works if you want to use one location, e.g USA, because you pay as little as $2/month. However, for the same value, you get more bang for your buck if you select other top, more reliable VPNs:
If you choose the monthly or yearly plan you get:
- Access to all locations
- Unlimited data
- WireGuard and OpenVPN
- Blocking of Ads, Trackers and Malware (R.O.B.E.R.T)
How many servers are there?
Winscribe has a wide distribution of servers in 110 cities across 63 countries.
You also get servers in South Africa so countries in Southern Africa like Zimbabwe can easily connect to the VPN network.
There is also a location called Fake Antarctica. On digging deeper, it’s actually an IP address that gives the location as Antarctica while the server is actually in Canada. Clever!
The widespread location of servers means you have more countries that you can select as you hide your actual location.
How many devices are supported?
With Windscribe, you can connect an unlimited number of devices unlike other VPNs that have limits, usually less than 10, per account.
There is also cross-platform support for the following operating systems:
Is there a kill switch? Wait for it…
Windscribe calls it the Firewall and it is built into the Windows and Mac applications. This Firewall blocks all connections outside the VPN tunnel hence there is 0% leakage.
These leaks may be:
- DNS leaks
- IPv6 leaks
- WebRTC leaks
This configuration is better than a standard kill switch which reacts to a disconnection of a VPN tunnel.
Although a kill switch works super-fast, there is a split-second period where data packets can be leaked to the ISP when the VPN tunnel is interrupted.
On the other hand, with a Firewall setup all the activity occurs inside the Firewall and no data is leaked, whether the VPN tunnel drops or not.
In other words, Windscribe has a kill switch on steroids!
Is there a no-logs policy?
As expected in any top VPN, Windscribe does not keep logs that tie back to you. If you want a VPN that has a strict 100% no-logs policy go for the best VPNs.
It’s true that they don’t keep connection logs, IP timestamps, session logs or monitor your internet activity.
However, they keep a temporary record of when you last used Windscribe and the total bandwidth used for 30 days. This is done to enforce free tier limits and prevent abuse.
This is one drawback with free VPNs hence there is no true 100% no-logs policy.
What encryption and VPN protocols are used?
Desktop applications use AES-256 cipher with SHA512 auth and 4096-bit RSA key. There is also perfect forward secrecy.
Browser extensions use TLS 1.2, ECDHE_RSA with P-256 key exchange and AES_128_GCM cipher.
As expected in a top VPN, this encryption is strong thus ensuring that your data is well-secured and hidden from hackers.
Windscribe uses the best VPN protocols:
- IKEv2 (default option, balances speed and security)
- OpenVPN (UDP and TCP)
- WireGuard (the latest VPN protocol with superior speed and security)
Unblock Netflix with Windflix
Windscribe has dedicated servers it uses to unblock specific Netflix catalogues and they name the feature Windflix.
As you know Netflix content varies from country to country due to an arrangement between content creators and Netflix.
Windflix allows you to unblock all content in the USA, Canada, UK and Japan.
How good is the customer support?
There is a live chatbot, Garry, that can answer almost all queries. This allows you to get quick help should you have any queries.
You can also make use of the extensive knowledge base to guide you and provide answers to frequently asked questions.
VPNs with questionable services are not keen to provide a strong customer support because the platform will be flooded with customer queries.
Windscribe is an excellent VPN that is amongst the best VPNs. My main concern is on the risk of hackers or the Canadian government accessing logs that are temporarily kept on servers.
On the brighter side, the Firewall is an excellent way to ensure that no data leaks occur should anything happen to the VPN tunnel. This is a VPN I will definitely recommend.
