Hidden24 VPN is a small VPN based in Sweden, a country with relatively excellent privacy laws. It is not the best VPN because of features that are limited. In this article, I look at the best Hidden24 VPN review and will conclude with my final thoughts about the VPN.
This VPN was created by a group of journalists back in 2005 as a way to hide their professional activities from the Sweedish government.
The VPN is offered for free to journalists but other users one have to choose a paid plan.
One notable feature of the VPN is that there are no apps, so to use it you have to configure the VPN manually, something that regular users may frown upon.
Top VPNs have apps for various devices, supporting all major operating systems, so if you want a hassle free VPN, check out the top VPNs here.
Pros and cons of Hidden24 VPN
- Unblocks Netflix, BBC iPlayer and Disney+
- Free for journalists
- No logs policy
- Only available in 7 countries
- No OpenVPN or WireGuard protocols
- No apps
- Only one device is connected at a time
- No money-back guarantee
- No kill switch
- No split tunneling
There are 3 plans to choose from, with the best plan being a 1-year plan where you get 20% off.
Sadly, there is no money-back guarantee so if you are not happy with the service, there is no way to recover your funds.
It’s definitely a poor strategy if the VPN provider wants to attract more paying users given how competitive the VPN industry is.
Payment is done using a credit card only, unlike big VPN providers that have embraced payment with cryptocurrencies.
For a much lower price you can get a VPN with way more security features as highlighted below:
- NordVPN – 69% off a 2-year plan, which is $3.30/month
- Surfshark VPN – 81% off a 2-year plan, which is $2.49/month
- CyberGhost VPN – 83% off a 2-year plan, which is $2.25/month
If you want more bang for your buck, you should try one of the VPNs above.
There are servers in 7 locations and these are the UK, US, Germany, France, Spain, Italy and Sweden.
In terms of global coverage, Hidden24 VPN cannot be compared to VPN giants like the ones I have mentioned above.
When you connect to the internet using Hidden24 VPN, a VPN tunnel is created between your device and the Hidden24 VPN servers.
Data is secured using L2TP/IPSec and 2048-bit encryption. You also have an option to use PPTP protocol, but this is obsolete and I don’t recommend it.
Therefore, when you use Hidden24 VPN, stick to L2TP/IPSec for maximum security.
Unless you are a journalist using Hidden24 VPN for free, it may not be wise to share sensitive information while using HIdden24 VPN.
Unblocking streaming services
Surprisingly, Hidden24 VPN unblocks Netflix, Disney+ and BBC iPlayer.
The only downside is that you pay more compared to better alternatives for the same unblocking power
Since Hidden24 VPN has a smaller client base, it’s easier for it to slip through major streaming services without getting detected.
IP and DNS leaks
A good VPN should not have any DNS leaks, IPv4 leaks or IPv6 leaks.
If there are leaks, your ISP, hackers or government agencies can see your location even when a VPN is conected.
The good news is that Hidden24 VPN has no DNS or IPv4 leaks but when you enable IPv6, you get DNS leaks and IPv6 leaks.
That is why the VPN provider advices users to disable IPv6 when configuring the VPN.
The only challenge with Hidden24 VPN is that DNS requests are not resolved using Hidden24 VPN servers, but instead Google DNS servers are used.
Obviously this compromises privacy because Google can see the IP addresses of users. Top VPNs resolve DNS requests using their own servers.
Devices and apps
If you think setting up Hidden24 VPN involves installing a simple app on your device, think again.
Instaed, you have to manually configure the VPN on a device that is compatible.
Hidden24 VPN supports these operating systems:
- Asus router RT-N66U
The only downside is that you only use the VPN with one device at a time. The only option you have is to set up the VPN on a router and connect multiple devices.
How Hidden24 VPN works
You set up the VPN via the network settings of your device.
Top VPNs like NordVPN, Surfshark and Cyberghost have apps to let you get the VPN up and running fast.
I wouldn’t recommend Hidden24 VPN if you are a newbie because of the cost, security and unavailability of other important features.
When you make a purchase of the VPN, you are redirected to a Getting Started page with PDF guides to set up the VPN on your device, be it Windows, Mac, Android or iOS.
For example, for Windows 10 Pro, you go to:
Settings > Network & Internet > VPN > Add a VPN connection
You then proceed to add the necessary details and the setup should be complete in a few minutes.
From the website dashboard, you can manage your account, with access to details of your subscription, profile information, renewal options and customer support.
Hidden24 VPN is definitely not for everyone because the cons way outweigh the pros (see above).
Not all devices have a built-in option to configure a VPN which places a limit to the number of compatible devices you can use with Hidden24 VPN.
In addition, even for devices with the option, you only have access to L2TP or PPTP, instead of a protocol like OpenVPN which is more effective in hiding traffic.
The other issue is with the price. For a lower price point, you get the best VPNs with all the standard features expected in a top VPN.
The top 3 VPNs I recommend include:
1. NordVPN – Best for security (Editor’s Choice)
- 30-day money-back guarantee
- 68% off a 2-year plan
2. Surfshark VPN – Low cost VPN
- All standard features at a fraction of a cost
- 81% off a 2-year plan
- Strictly no logs policy
- No DNS leaks
CyberGhost VPN – User friendly VPN
- Widespread coverage
- Strong anonymity while browsing
- 83% off a 3-year plan
- 45-day money-back guarantee
